Dear Brothers
This letter is in response to your recent inquiry regarding our prison pen-pal program. This is not your typical prison pen-pal ministry. We have a very limited ministry that works exclusively with convicted sex offenders. We help those offenders to recognize and to deal with the circumstances that led to the lifestyle that resulted in their sexual abuse of others, followed by their arrest and conviction for those crimes.
If you ARE a convicted sex offender, please rest assured that any and all correspondence between you and our ministry staff will be treated with the utmost confidentiality. We know that as a convicted sex offender, you can’t walk the yard like other prisoners, talking about the things that led you to prison. You are constantly stressed out and worried that someone may find out why you are in prison, and that they may try to harm you.
We want you to know that we care about you and we are here for you. You can talk to us about anything, so please feel comfortable in discussing your life with us, from your earliest memories of any abuse that you may have suffered as a child, your use (if any) of pornographic materials, and anything else that you'd like to discuss about your life, up until the time when you started “acting out” and finding yourself with legal problems. You can also discuss with us, your experiences in prison thus far, such as any abuse that you have been subjected to, as a result of your conviction as a sex offender.
Remember, we care for you, and we'd really like to hear what you have to say. In our responses to you, we will discuss various ways to help you to come to terms with the events of your life, and to help you to reprogram your old way of thinking, in order to give you a positive outlook on your future. No matter if you are a ‘short timer’ or a ‘lifer’, you can have a better life. You can become a New Creation.
If you yourself are NOT a convicted sex offender, we may not be the right pen-pal ministry for you, but we would certainly appreciate it, if you would pass this letter on to your prison chaplain, so that he may refer such offenders to our unique ministry.
