Open Letter to All Members Of Congress (Especially Congressman Sensenbrenner & All members of Judiciary Committee) and To The President of the United States: It is a sad day in America when our elected officials begin to think they are above listening to the voices of the voters that vote them in office and pay their high salaries. We, the people of America, have been steadily watching our prison populations increase year after year with great burdens being placed on our tax payers pocket books and no real efforts for our communities safety being a priority to those officials elected in Washington. We have been calling/writing/emailing the offices of Congress members daily asking, begging for them to support this Bill. Day after day we are being told by Sensenbrenner's office that he has better things to do then listen to the pleas of thousands of families writing and calling him begging him to support this Bill. Dear Senator Sensenbrenner : We are openly addressing you, writing you in hopes that we voters can convince you of the importance to our country that we, the American people, start insisting from our Congress changes in our Criminal Justice System . We really believe it is our entire Prison system that is failing society. We think America can do better and we should hold and will hold our elected officials accountable for doing better. Nobody ever discusses Prison Reform. We need fresh ideas in our prison systems. It is so obvious that the current Prison system set up the way it is; is failing our society. Yet no one likes to talk much about these known facts. We Americans can't just keep looking the other way pretending we don't see what's going on. This is America not a third world country. As Americans we should do better. Not just lock humans up in human dog cages for life and call that justice. We need a better way. We need real changes in our prisons. We Americans must demand better treatment of our prisoners. They too are humans. Eventually most prisoners get released, we are not safer as citizens if these prisoners do not receive education services, job training skills, mental services. If we don't educate them, provide them with skills to be productive citizens upon release and give them the psychiatric services they require , we are no better off when they are released back into our society. We need to give them a better chance to be productive citizens of our society instead of them returning to be criminals again. We are respectfully requesting your support of the H. R. 3072 Prison Reform Bill. We want you to introduce it to the house floor. The National Prison Commission Convened in Los Angeles on Feb 8th and 9th. They met to discuss these very issues we mention. There is currently a Prison Reform/Parole Bill in the House, H. R. 3072, that offers these changes everyone is seeking. We asked your support of this Bill. This Bill directly addresses the safety of all Correctional Officers and Prison Wardens ,as it at the same time, instills hope to Prisoners everywhere to earn the privilege of Parole. Come home Mr. President focus on the citizens of this country. It's time to fix the problems with America and let the foreign countries worship any God they so desire to. Bring better education to our people, higher paying jobs, more of them, medical and mental care for every US citizen that needs it. Put into place rehabilitate measures in Prisons that make both us citizens and those employed in Prisons safer in the long term. Don't just continue to put a band aid on our Prison systems. The Commission met to discuss safety and gangs and how one reduces the violence in Prisons. It's a simple thing-- it's called Instill Hope of a better future. We are respectfully requesting an opportunity to put together a well educated panel and hold this necessary discussion on Capital Hill in your office. A panel of experts from: The We Believe Organization, Mr. John Flahive, November Coalition, Nora, and our organization Advocate4Justice. Give us an hour of your time to inform you in Washington and the American public on the very important issues of why our criminal justice system needs effective changes in order to make our society safer in the long run. To that end, Advocate4Justice and our fellow groups are feverishly advocating in favor of H. R. 3072 (former H. R. 4036, as amended) a bill to Revive the System of Parole for Federal Prisoners, that was introduced, in the 109th Congress, by the Honorable U.S. Representative, Danny K. Davis (D) of Illinois on 27 June 2005. To date we have 9 Cosponsors of that bill: Rep. Danny Davis (D-IL), 6/27/05; Co-Sponsored by Rep Clay, Wm. Lacy - 9/29/2005; Rep Conyers, John, Jr. - 9/21/2005; Rep Rangel, Charles B. - 9/21/2005; Rep Jackson, Jesse L., Jr. - 12/7/2005, Rep Lewis, John - 12/7/2005; Rep Thompson, Bennie G. - 12/8/2005; Rep Jackson-Lee, Sheila - 12/8/2005; Rep Moore, Gwen - 12/14/2005 - Rep Owens, Major R. { N.Y.-11} 2/08/2006 . We want YOU Sensenbrenner to give us an opportunity to provide Congress with the true facts of how this Bill benefits us all. Majority of all federal inmates are eventually released. A lot of federal inmates were released last year in the United States. Presently, the current Prison population is on the rise every year it grows.. The cost to house these inmates increases exponentially as they age. Total cost to U. S. taxpayers for federal incarceration is upwards of billions yearly. Re-entry of mostly indigent elderly inmates is significantly affecting state budgets. After many years of incarceration, inmates tend to lose all support. Their wives and children abandon them. They lose their ability to find and keep a job because they are banned from most jobs requiring a license and have received no alternative training in prison. There is no money allotted to the federal prison system for rehabilitation programs. Reinstitution of the old parole and good time laws would reduce the inmate population considerably. Those statues, with minor changes, would reward those inmates who have shown positive institutional behavior with earlier release. Although early release would not be guaranteed, it would allow a second chance to those that prove they deserve that chance. Supervision of all offenders would revert once again to an existing agency with the expertise to determine the appropriate time for return to the community without endangering the public safety. It has been determined that this plan of parole and increased good time will save U. S. taxpayers a lot of money per year by taking mainly non-violent first-offenders out of the prison system earlier and enabling them to become part of the productive mainstream of American life. Advocate4Justice and our fellow organizations, established a two phase campaign and has been advocating heavily in favor of this legislation. Phase I: Public awareness and fundraising. Writing every member of the Senate and Congress asking for them to Cosponsor the bill.. Phase 2. Public press coverage and personally calling every member of Congress asking for their support. We ask you hear us . We will make our votes be heard in this election year. We are now gearing up for Phase II of the campaign: Advocate4Justice , along with our fellow organizations, has mounted a full scale campaign to the community urging them to contact each of you congressional members to support this legislation. We are requesting our membership and friends help by writing their elective officials. This is a community effort. Please help us convince Sensenbrenner this Bill is the right thing to do! Anybody can lock up humans in cages for life ; it takes real compassion to insist on making the necessary changes to our public officials to bring changes to the system to better help . Long jail terms do not help the public. It cost taxpayers too much money. Our tax dollars would be better spent getting these prisoners the help they need by way of educational services, rehabilitate services, psychiatric help, skills so they can better be productive citizens in our society instead of criminals. We can't just keep locking them up and pretending we solved the problem. We are going to run out of places to build new prisons if we don't fix our current broken criminal justice system. You Washington Congress members are in a unique position to ask for change. To make our elected officials do better for our society as a whole. Please grant us the opportunity to publicly address the issues with you. Give us the opportunity to present a fair and balanced view . The growing number of prisoners means the growing number of Prisoner's families who vote is increasing and soon to out number society as a whole. Let's make good effective changes now before we Americans regret not doing so later. Respectfully, Garry L.
